Settle For The Silver – A Poem

I should have settled
for second place
maybe then I wouldn’t
have lost this race
my overwhelming need
to finish first
has brought about
what I feared worst
not content with the silver
I tried for the gold
now at the end
I’m left feeling tired and old
sometimes you need to realize
when you begin
that there are races
you aren’t meant to win
my feet failed me
and I stumbled
my confidence faltered
and I was humbled
my head is bowed low
my brow creased in a frown
I can’t look into the eyes
of those I’ve let down
they expected my best
I tried to be tough
but what can you do
when your best isn’t enough?
