The Good

  • Brilliant performances all around, especially from Jake Gyllenhaal.
  • The subtle storytelling will have you discovering things about the characters long after you've left the theater.

The Bad

So much of the movie's storytelling is in the subtleties, there's a good chance that a majority of the audience will miss it.

Bottom Line

Great performances and subtle storytelling combine to make Prisoners a great think piece that requires viewers to look below the obvious surface.

I walked out of the theater prepared to give Prisoners a 3.5 star rating. I thought it was an enjoyable movie, and probably the best performance I’ve seen from Jake Gyllenhaal. But I felt like too much of the story wasn’t told, and that the characters’ background stories were begging to be fleshed out.

After my friend, Josh, started pointing out all the subtle cues I had missed, I realized that Prisoners is a much deeper movie than I was giving it credit for. And the more we talked through it, the more we found to like about the story, the characters, and the entire directorial approach.

With that in mind, Prisoners earns a solid 4-star rating.
