The Good

One of the best ensemble casts you could hope to assemble.

The Bad

A complete waste of the cast's talents.

Bottom Line

Despite the critical acclaim and Oscar nominations, American Hustle is definitely not a movie for everyone and feels like a waste of an excellent cast.

American Hustle
I originally wasn’t going to review American Hustle, because I don’t enjoy writing negative reviews. But, with today’s Academy Award nominations, which saw the film nominated for 10 awards, including Best Picture, I decided to air my (unpopular) opinion.

You’re probably starting to get the vibe that I didn’t enjoy American Hustle all that much. And you would be correct. I enjoyed the film less than probably anything else I saw in the theater, last year.

Don’t get me wrong. I really, really wanted to like American Hustle. I mean, look at that cast: Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jeremy Renner. How could I not like this movie? This is actually one of my biggest problems with American Hustle. A phenomenal cast that is mostly wasted on unlikable characters and unsatisfying dialogue. To be honest, I felt like Jennifer Lawrence and Jeremy Renner were the stand-outs, and they’re relegated to supporting roles.

Another problem I had with American Hustle is that it was often marketed as a comedy. In reality, there are very few humorous scenes. Make no mistake, American Hustle is a drama about unsavory people doing unsavory things.

My final complaint about American Hustle is simply this: it’s dull. There are large portions of the movie where very little happens and the story feels like it is advancing at a snail pace. As a matter of fact, if my wife were reviewing the movie, she would probably give it 0 stars. She was that bored.

Obviously, based on the critical acclaim American Hustle is receiving, I must be in the minority with my opinions. At the same time, this is not a movie for everyone, despite what the critics would have you believe. It’s definitely not a movie for me.
