Innocence Lost – A Poem

When was it that I lost my faith?
What makes the heart grow cold?
Childhood truth, now wishful memory
Youthful dreams faded as age took hold

I see the wonder in my son’s eyes
A heart of youth untouched by winter’s frost
Please don’t follow in my footsteps, little boy
Don’t ever become an innocent lost

Though I have to believe that it’s too late for me
Some scars don’t heal, a reminder of what life has cost
Don’t let go of your dreams, boy, keep your hope alive
Don’t ever let your innocence be lost

Thoughts only of true happiness
Genuine smile upon tiny lips
Baby steps carry you forward
Son, remember my words as you begin your trip
