Introducing the Poetry category

I decided to add a Poetry category to the site, after recently digging up 36 poems I wrote between the years of 1986 and 2001. I debated about which poems I should share, but in the end, I decided to throw caution to wind and just post them all – good, bad, or meh.

Back before social media and blogs allowed us to post our every thought to the masses, I discovered that writing poetry was an effective way to exorcise some of the demons I faced as a young man.

The poems themselves range from sappy, to dark, to “dude, seek professional help.” And while they rarely spell out exactly what the subject matter is that inspired them, many of the poems pull directly from my life experiences with topics like domestic abuse, love, loss, regret, and self-doubt. Some of the poems are still relevant to who I am today, and some were written by a very different person. One thing became clear to me as I read back through them, however; my introduction to depression started long before I could put a name to my struggles.

So, for better or worse, I present my new Poetry category. I hope you’ll find at least one or two poems that you can relate to or enjoy.
