Intel_432x288_StaticYou all know what a tech geek I am. If you’re like me, you love new technology, and often wish you could play with it, hands-on, rather than just reading about it on a website or seeing it on TV. Well, my family and I recently headed to the Best Buy in Mall of America to check out their brand new Intel Technology Experience zone, and let me tell you, it’s awesome. The tech is mind-blowing, and you can test it out yourself, right in the store!

I felt like a kid in a candy store. The Intel Technology Experience zones average 240 square feet and are loaded with devices like tablets, laptops, a 3D printer where you can build and print your own 3D robot, an augmented-reality Mars mission simulator, and a digital DJ section featuring Ne-Yo, where you can create your own music tracks.

You can design and print your own 3D robot. Seriously. A robot.

The Intel Technology Experience zones are staffed by specially trained Best Buy Blue Shirts who can answer your questions and geek out with you. When I was drooling over the Intel-powered laptops, I’m not sure who was more excited to be talking about specs and processors; me, or the friendly Blue Shirt.
Intel_432x288_Static_MarsMy kids spent most of their time at the augmented-reality Mars table. It is outfitted with model Mars terrain, which you can “drive” on, using the tablets at the station. You choose your vehicle and then aim the tablet’s camera at the mission area on the terrain. Your vehicle appears on your tablet, and you can drive it by simply moving the tablet, which acts as kind of a heads-up display. Words really don’t do it justice, so here’s a picture of my kids dodging meteor showers with their virtual Mars rovers:

The virtually-augmented Mars station was a huge hit with the kids.

If you’re a fellow tech junky who can’t wait to get your hands on the latest technology, I highly recommend visiting your nearest Best Buy Intel Technology Experience zone. You’ll be glad you did.
